Patty Melt at The Garret

Howdy folks!

Today's quickwrite involved a little bit of fiction and imagination!

We then read a story called Raising Dragons by Jerdine Nolan:

And then we answered some questions using details from the text to support our answer:

For math today utilized the distributive property as well as the commutative property to get the product of a multiplication word problem:

I'm trying my best not to teach the standard multiplication algorithm (which will come in later grades), but rather give students a set of tools or strategies to use so that they can choose what works best for them. These strategies impart a strong understanding of number sense, which will help them as they move on! With the distributive property, students can break/partition a big number up into manageable pieces. In the case of huge numbers, I urged the students to break up that number into rows of ten groups, since multiplying by 10 is easy. For the commutative property students can switch the factors around, and have less groups to calculate.

We also had a mini lesson on the measures of liquid volume! We discussed how many milliliters there were in a liter, as well as discussed how two containers may be shaped differently but hold the same volume.

A teaspoon is 5 ml!

And that's wrap folks! Cheers!
