The Brandon Roll @ Cha Cha Sushi

Happy Tuesday folks!

Here was our Brainstart from today:

We spent part of the morning for a couple of Word Study mini-lessons! Our first lesson was more on letters that make the /aw/ sound. Today's vowel digraph with the /aw/ sound is au. In collaborative groups, we generated a list of words that we believe contain the au digraph, as well as make the /aw/ sound:

Click for some interactive au games!

We finished up the final two chapters of Zita the Spacegirl, and we used bridge maps to help us find synonyms of words (from the story) we didn't know too well. We combined the strategy of context clues and the use of an online thesaurus to make sure the synonym we generated were true synonyms!

We also discussed the hero's journey and how it is applicable to many stories that we will be reading. We used a tree map, to list aspects of the hero's journey in Zita the Spacegirl:

During math block today, we discussed different operations (subtraction, addition, etc,) to use in order to answer a word problem. We also discussed writing an equation, using a 100s grid, using a number line, or using a 100's chart to help us with our use of operations. We need to go back to this specific lesson tomorrow, as a many of us were a bit off task during the presentation portion of the lesson. Many of us also did not follow group norms during collaboration; hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!

During Writer's Workshop, we had a quick mini-lesson on considering what's going well in our writing, and what we might try next to take our writing ti the next level. We had a quick modeling of using checklist to see what we needed to work on in terms of our writing skills. Tomorrow, we will apply this checklist to our writing!

Near the end of the day, we went over tonight's HW, and had a class meeting, specifically discussing what is considered appropriate behavior in the class room, especially when the teacher is utilizing whole-class instruction.

And that's the breakdown for Tuesday folks! Cheers!
